This presentation examines the political and economic rise of the Noboa family as a paradigmatic case of oligarchic power accumulation in contemporary Ecuador.
Part 2: Discourse and Omissions in Ecuador’s Proposed Law on Protected Areas and Local Development
This talk analyzes a new Ecuadorian law proposal promoting investment in protected areas, revealing how its discourse and omissions redefine legitimacy in governing nature and local territories.
About the Speakers:
- Pablo Campos is a Research Associate at the Südwind Institute in Bonn. His work focuses on the political economy of Latin America, with particular emphasis on the historical development and power structures of the banana agro-industrial complex.
- Wendy Chávez Páez is a Junior Researcher at ZEF CPC. Her research focuses on mangrove conservation and local governance, analyzing conflicts faced by coastal communities involving the state, shrimp and fish industries, and criminal groups, exploring both their historical roots and current impacts.
- Belén Díaz is a lecturer at the Institute for Latin American Studies (FU Berlin) with a PhD in Sociology. She researches the global strategies of the far right.

Wir forschen zu Themen wie Entwicklungszusammenarbeit, Frauen und Weltwirtschaft, Klimagerechtigkeit Nachhaltigkeit auf Finanzmärkten, zu Rohstoffen und Wertschöpfungsketten sowie zu Sozialstandards im Welthandel. In Deutschland verbinden wir unsere Recherchen mit entwicklungspolitischer Bildungs- und Öffentlichkeitsarbeit. Wir sind überzeugt: Dort, wo Menschen unter den Auswirkungen des globalen Wirtschaftssystems leiden, besteht ein direkter Zusammenhang zwischen dem Reichtum einiger weniger und der Armut vieler Menschen. Hierfür sind ungerechte wirtschaftliche und politische Strukturen verantwortlich und wir wollen dazu beitragen, diese zu ändern.
